Coloristic is a simple utility which magnifies the area of the screen surrounding the current mouse position. It will also display the color value for the pixel that is exactly under the mouse position and allow you to copy that color value to the clipboard. The current mouse position is represented in the Coloristic window with a square that is always located in the center of the magnified image.
Features
The color value can be displayed in one of three formats: Decimal, Hexadecimal, and Internet. The Internet format is that which is used in HTML based web pages. This format is controlled through the preferences dialog which can be accessed via the Edit menu and is also used as the format for the color value when it is copied to the clipboard.
Any time the caps lock key is down, the magnified image in the Coloristic window is locked and won't change as the mouse is moved. There will also be a small lock icon in the top-right corner of the color value area as a reminder. Locking the magnified image allows you to use your mouse without losing the last color value. It will also allow you to click and drag in the Coloristic window to measure horizontal and vertical pixels distances.
The color value area of the Coloristic window can be hidden by either pressing the space bar or double clicking on the window. This gives you a larger view of the magnified image without having to resize the window. Pressing the space bar or double clicking again will show the color value area.
Preferences
Using the "Scale pixels to window size" check box you can control what happens to the magnified image when the window is resized. By default, each pixel on the screen is magnified eight times before being displayed in the Coloristic window. What this means is that as you resize the window, more or less of the screen is shown in the window. However, with this check box turned on, the size of a pixel in the Coloristic window scales larger or smaller as the window is resized so that a fixed sized portion of the screen is always shown in the window.
The "Show grid" option can be used to turn on and off a grid in the Coloristic window which corresponds to the boundaries between the pixels in the magnified image.
The "Color Format" pop up menu can be used to choose between the predefined color formats for the color value that is displayed and copied to the clipboard. The Prefix, Separator, and Suffix edit fields can be used to insert up to 2 characters each for the formatted color value that is copied in the clipboard.
